Fado - Fado Portugues

The word Fado means Portuguese music, especially songs that can only be traced back to the beginning 1800, but is most probably much older and has probably also Moorish and Brazilian modinha music that influenced it's form as we know it today.

The Fado songs can be about anything, but most often they are full of nostagia, often melancholic and sad. I like to compare the Protuguese Fado in a large sense to the American Blues music of the black people, even if the sound as such is totally different.

Amalia Rodriguez - Fado Singer

The best know Fado singer is certainly Amalia Rodriguez. Amalia was the first Fado singer to enjoy international success and as such carried the Fado music into the world. Today there are a number of excellent Fado singers that are known the world over.

Coimbra Fado - Fado de Coimbra

Coimbra Fado is a differnet type of Fado and has it's origins in the city of Coimbra, Portugal. It was adopted as the music of the university students of this city, also known as Student Fado (Fado de Estudante). It is generally considered the typical music of Coimbra itself.

The Coimbra Fado is performed with the traditional Guitarra de Coimbra. Guitarists Artur Paredes and his son Carlos Paredes are considered the pioneers and masters of the Fado de Coimbra.

Early Fado Singers

The best know Fado singers before the time of Amalia Rodriguez were: Carlos Ramos, Alfredo Marceneiro, Berta Cardoso, Maria Teresa de Noronha, Hermínia Silva, Fernando Farinha, Fernando Maurício, Lucília do Carmo and Manuel de Almeida.

Today's Generation of Fado Singers

Today' generatio of Fado singers have helped to revitalize the Fado and many of them enjoy international success as well as in Portugal and Brezil: Maria Ana Bobone, Mariza, Joana Amendoeira, Misia, Miguel Capucho, Mafalda Arnauth, Ana Sofia Varela, Kátia Guerreiro, Camané, Gonçalo Salgueiro, Diamantina, Cristina Branco and Ana Moura.

What customers say about the Pimsleur PORTUGUESE audios:

Great beginning language course for those long commutes
The Pimsleur series is very different from the other language CDs I have tried. It uses repetitive short conversations and sentences to intuitively learn grammar and structure without formally "thinking" about the grammar and structure. This approach is slow, but very effective. Each lesson is 30 minutes in length and gradually adds to the previous lesson. Other language CDs often just have you mimic and repeat different words or sentences over and over, which gets old fast. Pimsleur has you repeat the words a few times, but then asks you to recall them on your own, and puts them in context using short conversations where you ask and answer questions with an imaginary Brazilian woman sitting next to you (presumably at a bar). The Conversational series are just an introduction to PImsleur Level I courses, so you won't know much by the end of them, and will need to buy the full set. --

I love the method that Pimsleur employs to make a new language stick to the grey matter between my ears. The CD says the words in English and then in Portuguese, with careful pronounciation. There are nice, long pauses to repeat the words aloud. As the lessons progress, the prompts vary from just a translation to things like "Say 'good morning, miss'". It teaches a few phrases, then adds a few more, then goes back to prompt you to recall what you learned a lesson ago and combines it with the new phrases. I hope to visit Portugal someday, and Pimsleur will help me function as a tourist! -- Wendy Black,Santa Rosa, CA, USA
